6/5/02 (composer, vocal) Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary Hearing Impaired Department program. The HI (Hearing Impaired) students had studied Michigan environmental problems, partially through the lyrics of my song The Lake Is Our Heart, which was published by the Michigan Science Teachers Association. To my surprise, Hearing Impaired program teacher Mrs. V. told me that the kids would like to perform the song for their parents, and asked for my help. I agreed, and recorded an accompaniment CD with enhanced bass (for rhythm "feel").
Mrs. V. "ran the show," conducting, translating and generally helping the students. The children sang/signed (depending upon ability) the chorus,
"We're all in this together, you must do your part. We've got to stop pollution, the lake is our heart...",
while I sang the verses,
"...and pen in hand, mail your thoughts to your Congressman..."
I have never been so proud of my composition and teaching - I successfully used my music to help students with limited or no ability to hear. They did a great job!!
