26. Robert LINGO was born between 1798 and
1803 in OH. He died in 1860 in Venice Twp, Shiawassee Co., MI. Could also
be McLingo as indicated in IGI Record Batch number M513481.
The Scottish surname LINGO is derived from the lands of Lingoch in
the parish of Carnbee, County Fife, Scotland. The earliest known recorded
use of the surname in Scotland is by Ulfus de Lingoch, who witnessed a
charter granted in the early 1200s. The Lingo surname is included in a
list of septs of Clan Graham provided by His Grace, the 7th Duke of Nontrose,
the late Chief of the Grahams. The earliest known Lingo Immigrant to America
was John Lingo who on November 18, 1655, patented 350 acres of land in
the southwest side of the Chickahominy River in the Virginia colony. On
October 6, 1658, John Lingo received a grant of 300 acres of land on the
north side of the Chicahominy. A large number of Lingo families lived on
the Delaware-Maryland-Virginia peninsula in the early colonial period.
Edwards Dunstan married Elizabeth Lingo on May 12, 1661, in Hungar's Parish,
Northampton County, VA, and Lingos were in that county at least through
1733. Several Lingo families lived in Somerset County, MD, in the 1720s
and 1730s and in Accomack County, VA in the 1750s through the early 1800s.
A sizable group resided in Sussex County, Del, from the 1750s through the
early 1800s, many of whom took part in the American Revolution and the
War of 1812. There are several natural features in the vicinity of Lewes,
Sussex County, Del, that bear the name Lingo, including Lingo Cove, Lingo
Creek, Lingo Landing, and Lingo Point.
It appears the Sussex County, Del, and Somerset County, MD, Lingo families
were interrelated and at least on of the Lingo families in Accomack County,
Va, after the turn of the 19th century was related to the family in Somerset
County, Md. All of the DelMar Va families may have originated from the
Northampton County, VA, Lingo family. In the early 1800s, several Lingo
families migrated south and west, into North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia, Tenessee, Arkansas and Missouri and eventually further afield
where descendants are to be found today. The above information was supplied
by Jerri Burket (Prodigy MW08A) taken from the summer 1995 issue of the
newsletter, Clan Graham News, where it was contributed by Terry L. Carpenter,
10617 SW 55th Place, Gainesvile, FL 32608.
